Northern Trip (in a nut shell)

Well the northern trip was very nice (minus Genova). It was great to get away from the city and see other parts of the country. We went to Lucca, Genova, Torino, Verona, Vicenza and Vinazia (in that order). It seems like Torino was a big hit, and i would have to agree. Saunders tried to get us to Milan, but that got shot down.
I will not get into details with this post because there is so much to say and talk about, i will let some pictures do the talking. Unfortunately we didn't have much time to do any sketching, but we did a ton of

walking and saw more churches than most of us would like to admit.
Some of the architectural highlights were the new city plan for Genova, the wall round Lucca, the Scarpa castle/museum in Verona, and S. Marko in Venezia. Of course there are many more sweet works that we visited, but to be honest, i cannot put my finger on the names or the places of all of them...just check out the pics.

see you when you come back!

Walking tour without the walking

Hey matt,

Hope everything is going well in at home.

Yesterday we had another lovely tour with Jan... He showed tried to show how Rome of antiquity transformed into Medieval Rome. Unfortunately I only took two pictures... BUT here they are ;-)

As well as another random assortment
I could post up some notes next time we get internet..

These 2 pictures just show how the old temples and forums fell into disuse and were no longer maintained when Rome's population dwindled to only 10% if what it was in it's hey day. Anyway.. the buildings looked like crap so people started to build around and on them.. ..

pretty interesting till you think about how the whole of rome is just the same, the old built ontop of even older, built ontop of even older then the older...

anyway hope you're getting rest and healing well.... ciao!

Ostia Antica again

In Ostia Antica, in some eggshell thing that they used to carry food and goods in...

sexy pic

bene bene bene bene bene

ciao ciao matt sono ANTONIO aka andrew (#1) cinzia threw out some names to the pair of andrews and i got antonio and andrew diehl got carlo thus the birth of my blog name.

we walked a portion of the aurelian wall circuit last week (the outer wall that surrounds rome) our guide jan(as seen in the back) gave us a brief brief overview of the history of the wall and its significance to the city throughout time. you can google for info or get a very "general" background of it from wikipedia. hopefully we can all throw something at you so you can at least know where we've been and what we're up too. i'll post a few more pictures of the wall. (wikipedia has some maps too so you could get oriented). take it easy man

Updates...

Hi Matty! I hope everything is going well from home. Here are some pictures to keep you updated on what's going on...they are also on my blog:

Ponte Pr. Amedeo Sav. Aosta (this bridge was right outside the hospital where you were staying)

This was the theatre in Ostia Antica, a well preserved early Roman city, that at one point was turned into a military camp.

The Campidoglio Monument, in Piazza Campidoglio. Used as a war monument after a while.

Also in Piazza Campidoglio.

Saunders and his wife, and baby Oliver! This was in Ostia Antica.

Our Class at Ostia Antica, with one of our History Professors, the craziest man I'll ever know, JAN from Belgium! He knows absolutely EVERYTHING.

St. Peter's Basilica, BAD PHOTO of the church, but LOOK AT THAT CLOUD!

Welcome

Hey everyone,

Welcome to the RPI Roma Experience 2007 Blog. As I stated in my e-mail to the group, the primary purpose of the blog is to serve as a nerve center for the different media which will be passed back and forth to keep me up to speed on the events, classes, fun times, boring times, and everything in between while in Rome. There will be many other facets of distance learning involved in this program, I'm sure (besides just a simple blog), but I think this is a good central place for organizing thoughts. Post often, post whatever comes to your head! I want to hear about everything as if I was actually there... and take tons of pictures! See you all soon!
